THE Island Games Association of Jersey’s cycling representative has firmly refuted any suggestion that Jersey will not be sending a full team to the 2005 NatWest Island Games in Shetland.
The wires have been humming in Guernsey after Guernsey’s multi gold medal winner Ann Bowditch told the Guernsey Press that she may not be defending her title due to a probable lack of competition because Jersey was not planning to send a full-strength squad.
Tony Richomme, who has been Island Games cycle team manager for the last few Games and is a long-serving member of the IGAJ, said: ‘We are sending a full squad of men and women cyclists to the Shetlands.
There will be a team of five men and three women travelling.
‘There are usually three mountainbikers who travel too, although at the moment I’m not certain about them because the hosts have yet to confirm that mountainbiking will be included in the programme.
We should hear more news on that front after the agm, in Shetland, next week,’ Jersey has a number of top-class cyclists, among them the 2003 Guernsey Games time trial and road race team silver-medallists Chris Spence, Ali Cann, Sam Firby, David Jardine and Danny Le Marquand.
Also in good form at the moment is Steve Greig, with newcomer Vincent Peron featuring regularly in the top three in local races, and junior Richard Tanguy who gives the seniors a run for their money and who will be old enough to compete in next year’s competition.
