Former Greffier to stand for Jurat

FORMER States Greffier Mary Newcombe (66) is standing for Jurat in the forthcoming election following the retirement of the former Lieut-Baliff, Jurat Mike Rumfitt.

Miss Newcombe, who is being proposed by Finance and Economics Committee president Senator Terry Le Sueur and seconded by solicitor Carol Canavan, was born in London.

Involved in her early career in the making of TV commercials and documentaries, she came to the Island in October 1963 and took on a job as secretary for Huelin Growers on the Esplanade.

In June 1968 she became a committee clerk for the States and started what was to be a 34-year career of close involvement in the administration of the Island’s government.

Other posts included being executive officer to the Policy and Resources Committee and Deputy States Greffier, which she was appointed in 1991.

In September 2000 she became States Greffier, a post she held for two years until her retirement.

Over the years Miss Newcombe has also carried out a number of voluntary posts, including being secretary of the arts sub-committee at the time of the building of the Jersey Arts Centre theatre.

She has also been secretary of the Jersey Council of Churches and is currently a member of the Public Lotteries Board and secretary of the Standing Conference of Women’s Organisations.
