Nurses angered by chief’s letter

NURSES are reported to be upset and angry over a letter sent to all staff by their new chief executive officer commenting on the standard of their work.

In the letter sent by Mike Pollard to all Health and Social Services staff outlining a new management structure for the organisation, he refers to ‘a lack of consistently high nursing standards across the HSS despite the very best endeavours of many managers and nurse leaders’.

The nurses’ union representative has now written back to Mr Pollard, who took on the post in May, expressing concern about those comments and asking him to give a more detailed explanation about what prompted them.

Mr Pollard said this week that he had not referred to low standards in the letter.

The issue was making sure there were consistencies in the application of high standards.

‘I’m sure all nurses would want that,’ he said.

Among the aims of the new structure would be to introduce the post of modern matrons - a role which, he said, had proved to be very popular with the public in the UK.
