ST Clement’s Primary School could move to a new £6.1 million single-site school if plans for the new building are approved by the States.
The school is the only one in Jersey which is on a split site and has a road running between its two buildings.
The old part of the school still has outside toilets and children have to cross the road on a daily basis.
If the plans are approved the old parish building should be handed back to the parish and demolition of the low-rise key stage one site will begin this month.
The proposition, presented to the States this week for debate at a later date, describes the new building as being of a ‘faceted shape’ to provide access away from the road while maintaining the current playing field and hard court areas of the school.
It is expected that construction of the new school will begin in January 2005 and be completed in May 2006.
It will be single form entry and will accommodate 175 to 189 pupils, as well as putting a new 30-place nursery on the site.
The revenue costs of the project have been estimated at £79,000 per annum with an additional 2.75 full time equivalent staff needed to man the nursery.
