SEX education could be encouraging children to have under age sex, according to one States Member.
Deputy David Crespel is concerned that by promoting safe sex to under age students, Jersey’s schools and care agencies are effectively promoting under age sex, encouraging teenage pregnancy, increasing sexually transmitted diseases and undermining the law and young people’s childhoods.
And he wants to be assured that Jersey’s parents know ‘what is going on’ with their children.
The Deputy plans to ask questions of the presidents of Health and Social Services, and Education, Sport and Culture in the States on Tuesday concerning the provision of sex education and abortion treatments and advice available in the Island.
He has raised the subject following publication of a case in the UK where a 14-year-old girl had an abortion arranged by a school health worker without the consent of her mother.
The Deputy wants to know whether children in Jersey are being given abortions and related advice and treatment without parental consent.
