THE Island Games Association of Jersey’s 1,000 Challenge Special takes place next weekend.
The major fund-raising event is being held at Les Quennevais with the aim of raising funds and offsetting competitors’ costs for the Shetland Games next summer.
There will be plenty to do at Les Quennevais next Sunday, between 10 am and 4 pm, as 15 sports can be tried out with the theme centring on a series of 1,000 challenges.
Alongside the sports there will be entertainment, a massive car boot sale (telephone 872187 to book your space), and many other stalls.
Swim coach Paul du Feu, who thought up the fund-raising idea, said: ‘Visitors to Les Quennevais sports complex next weekend can expect to see a wide range of sports being displayed.
‘But more importantly these sports want the public to join in and have a go.
It really will be a fun time for all the family and although they will have to pay to play - by way of a donation or a small charge - the money will help reduce competitors’ costs for Shetland.’ Jersey’s bowlers, who have been successful in national competition in the past two weeks, will be on the croquet laws offering ‘target’ bowls.
A bouncy castle for under-7s will be nearby so parents can leave their children there while they try the bowls out.
Anyone who fancies shooting for the first time will have the opportunity.
Ten shots for £1 will give budding marksmen a chance to fire an air gun or an air rifle.
In the pool, swimmers can ‘join the experts’ and swim 40 lengths, the equivalent of 1,000 metres.
Participants will make a donation to the swim team rather than pay the normal swim charges.
Club swimmers will be poolside all day and as a special one-off ‘a technique lesson’ will be available.
A top Island coach will also be available for a 15-minute ‘improve your swimming’ lesson for £5.
To book telephone 500201.
During the afternoon the Jersey Pétanque Club will open its doors for new and old members - a lovely way to relax after the swim! Boys and girls from two Island gymnastic clubs will be tumbling down specially designed 12-metre long air tracks.
Spectators will see a wide range of ways to travel down these tracks from the simple forward roll to complex somersaults.
Visitors to the challenge can tumble for a small charge.
The Jersey Table Tennis Association will have their serving robot in action on one of the squash courts - a challenge for any table tennis player, young or old.
Several of the Island’s top juniors will also be on hand should anyone wish to pay up and beat the kids.
Professional golfing staff from La Moye will be on hand to help golfers improve their swings.
Island players will also be in attendance for guidance with driving (into a net) and putting.
Excellent tuition for a small fee.
With the Euro 2004 now nearly over there will be a chance for participants to show their friends how David Beckham and company should have taken their penalty kicks against Portugal in England’s quarter-final defeat.
The Jersey Football Referees Association will be on hand all day with the shoot-out and a chance to take on the best.
The Jersey Archery Association will stage a corporate competition running between 10 am and 1 pm and afterwards it will be the turn of the public, with expert tuition of course, to see how well they can score with six arrows for £1.
Many other sports, including cycling, volleyball and athletics, are expected to be on offer on the day.
There will be lots to do and see for all the family and all for the benefit of Jersey’s sportsmen and women to enable them to compete in the Shetland Island Games in 2005.
