MORE effort is needed to convince Islanders that arts events are worth both their time and money, a survey commissioned by the Jersey Arts Trust has found.
However, of the 600 who responded to the 3,000 questionnaires sent out, the overwhelming majority placed a very high value on the arts.
Arts Trust chief executive Chris Clifford said the results gave real authority to the argument for increased funding for the arts.
The survey revealed that the top three reasons for not attending arts events were the price, shortage of time and insufficient promotion or information.
In addition, the survey showed that seven out of ten people had been to a library at least once during the previous 12 months and 98 per cent had been to an arts event, which included going to see a film or dancing in a nightclub.
Mr Clifford said that the statistics compared very well with similar figures in the UK, where fewer people placed such a high value on the arts.
