THE Ansbacher Athlete of the Match Award went to Dale Garland for his awesome 7.65m long jump in the Division III Southern Men’s League match last weekend.
Garland’s jump was a new Division III league record, exceeded the Guernsey record by 36 cm, and placed him fourth in the UK long jump rankings.
His was one of a number of excellent performances from athletes of the Channel Islands Athletic Club, which remains firmly at the top of Division III, after their performances in their match at Perivale last weekend.
They won 29 of the 36 events on the programme and accumulated a massive points total to easily win the day.
However, Jersey’s U20 athlete Simon Phelan had been pencilled in for the award before the long jump competition had started, because he had won all five events in which he competed, and achieved PBs in the pole vault and 110m hurdles (senior men’s height).
Once again the contingent of under-17 years athletes, competing against the senior men, excelled themselves.
Stephen Prosser won the A 100m and 200m; Paul Dingle won the B 400m, long jump and triple jump; and newcomer to the team, Jason Fox won the B high jump competition.
‘I’m delighted with the progress of the athletes’ performances over the last three matches,’ coach and team manager Andrew Winnie said.
‘With so many personal best performances being achieved it shows how valuable this competition is.
The combination of regular competition and tremendous team spirit has contributed to the continuing development of all the athletes.’
