Union plans protest for rush hour

TOWN is likely to be brought to a standstill and the Airport could be affected by a major union protest during next Tuesday morning’s rush hour.

All 1,500 public sector members of the Transport and General Workers Union have been requested to attend the mass walk-out which will start in the People’s Park at 8 am.

The union is also asking its private sector members and the public in general to join the protest against job losses, privatisation and tax changes.

The threat has prompted Senator Frank Walker to write to all States Members to explain how last week’s approval of the Strategic Plan means, in his opinion, that jobs are protected.

The protesters will march to the Royal Square in time for the States debate on future tax policy, inevitably causing traffic chaos during the rush hour.

Transport Union official Nick Corbel says essential services such as the Hospital will not be affected but other areas could be, including the Airport.

The Bellozanne dump and incinerator will definitely be closed for most of the morning.

Airport director Mike Lanyon said he would only know if flights were to be affected when the scale of the walk-out was known on Tuesday itself.

Mr Corbel says disruption will be kept to a minimum but the protest is important.
