THE Transport and General Workers Union is expecting significant backing from private sector colleagues for tomorrow’s protest against possible future job losses and States tax proposals.
Meanwhile, it would appear there has been a breakthrough initiated by the union over their willingness to co-operate in moves to streamline the Island’s public sector.
Union official Nick Corbel wrote last week to Policy and Resources suggesting implementing safeguards to protect jobs in future that the employers’ side have now accepted.
But Mr Corbel only found out today that P & R had agreed to his requests, when told by the JEP.
The news was revealed in a letter sent out to States Members by P & R president Senator Frank Walker.
The Senator describes Mr Corbel’s suggestion that a States Scrutiny Panel could be asked to investigate union concerns over future intentions to privatise public sector work as a ‘heartening development’.
