Weekend round-up

WORLD 2-litre powerboat champion Roy Smith and navigator Dave Simpkins overcame Force 5 wind and rough seas in their boat Condor Ferries off Littlehampton yesterday to win the third heat of the National Offshore 2 litre Championship.

They are now second overall in the championship.

GOLF: The winner of the Demi Golf Society July monthly medal competition played at St Clement’s on Saturday was Kenny Mitchell with a nett score of 63 off a handicap of 12.

Second was Glyn Wilkes, nett 64, 10 handicap and third David Le Duc, nett 65, 19 handicap.

JUNIOR GOLF: Gyles Robin continued his superb run of form by winning the Pepsi Junior League at the Royal Jersey Golf Club on Friday evening.

Robin shot an excellent gross 74 to gather 39 points.

His birdie on the 18th put him level with Andrew Rafferty, the 22 handicapper who had also scored 39 points.

Both had scored 20 points on the front nine and returned in 19 with Robin winning on the back six holes.

James Singleton finished third on 36 points and loses top spot in the league to Robin with two fixtures still to play.

SHOOTING: Richard Le Brun was winner of Class A and High Gun at Crabbé Clay Pigeon Club’s 50 bird sporting competition yesterday.

His score was 42 ex 50.

Albert Able won the B class with 37 ex 50 and Robert Wilson won Class C with 35.

SAILING: Races 7 and 8 of the Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club Hobie Fleet Summer series were held in St Aubin’s Bay yesterday with Gordon Burgis and Kenny Snell winning both races and David Carter and Ian Simpson finishing second in both.

In third place in race 7 were Glyn and Tim Mitchell while Grant Neale and Karen Larose were third in race 8.

In the B fleet races Peter Scriven and Mike Vautier won both races; Steve Haydon and Andrew Hart were second in both and Robin and Jane Gravestock were third in both.

The Pearce brothers Alex and Léon won both Cadet Dragoon races with Simon Thébault and Jodie Carney taking two second places.

Jamie Riddock and Rory Rice claimed a third in race 7, while Matthew Dale, Thomas Harris and Laura Jane Carter were third in race 8.

SHOOTING: St Clement won the Le Feuvre Trophy in the inter-parish shooting competition yesterday with a total score of 398.37 but Mary Norman, representing St Brelade who finished in fourth place, was the top scorer overall with 105.13.

WHIPPET RACING: Surprise first-time winner of the Sue Ahearn Memorial Trophy was Coyote who pipped his older sister Capuccina, last year’s winner, over the 95-yard race on Saturday.

Both of them are owned and bred by Steve Lawson.

They were followed in third place by Jenny Thomas’s Jetstream and, in fourth place, by Una La Ruez’s Sprite, who also took the veteran of the day rosette.

Winner of the consolation race was David Lawson’s Cadbury.

PETANQUE: The Inter Insular played in Guernsey on Saturday was won by Guernsey by 27 games to 21.

Best Jersey pair were Pru Vibert and Keaven Taylor with four wins out of four.

BOWLS: Results of the Myrtle Le Marquand League played on Saturday: Jersey Bowling Club 17, St.

Saviour’s BC 7; JBC 14, St Saviour’s BC 19.

CYCLING: The winners of the Jersey Cycling Association Circuit Championships at Les Quennevais track yesterday were: Seniors: 1, Sam Firby; 2, Chris Spence.

Veterans: 1, Tony Richomme, 2, Paul Lipscombe.

Ladies: 1, Sarah Smith; 2, Jim Davis.

Juniors: 1, Peter Ilton; 2, Tom Bailey.

SOFTBALL: Results of the Barclays Summer Softball League matches played yesterday are: CPA Pirates 20, Gordon’s Falcons 8; AIB Shamrocks 15, MGs 0 (game scratched); Cubs 13, Barclays Blue Sox 4; CPA Pirates 11, AIB Shamrocks 7; Wheways Wildcats II 24, Ansbacher Flyers 20.

MOTOR SPORT: Formula 1800 driver Ryan Parouty finished in second place in yesterday’s Avon Tyres FF race at Brands Hatch.

He had qualified fastest and was in pole position on the grid, but was beaten by Christiano Morgado by just under eight seconds.

GOLF: John Poynton won the Liverpool Cup medal match at La Moye on Saturday with a gross 82, nett 70, 12 handicap ahead of Andy Boxall with gross 73, nett 70, three handicap.

Third was Chris Young, gross 84, nett 71, handicap 13.

ATHLETICS: A severely-depleted Ansbacher CI women’s team competed in Portsmouth at the weekend.

Despite finishing last, both junior and senior athletes pulled out all the stops.

They achieved five personal bests and collected sufficient points to drop only one place in the league.

The points and the place should be regained quickly when the full team competes in the next round.

GAELIC FOOTBALL: The Jersey Gaelic football side travelled to the Ruislip, Middlesex, at the weekend to play St Kiernans, and were beaten by just the one point after a fantastic comeback in the second half when they came from 14 points behind.

Final score was Jersey 17 (2 goals 11 pts), St Kiernans 18 (1 goal 15 pts).

SAND RACING: Dennis Le Breton won all five senior motorcycle class races at St Ouen on Saturday while Adam Harris, who won the trophy of the day, won the 50 cc automatic class.

In the Standard Production car classes Richard Amy won the 1300 cc class and trophy; Carl Waye won the 1400 cc and Andy Le Marquand the 1600 cc.

ATHLETICS: The Primary Schools Athletics inter-insular took place in Guernsey on Saturday.

Jersey won by 115 points to 63.

KARTING: Finals winners in the Jersey Kart and Motor Club event at Sorel Point yesterday were: Joshua Vautier, Honda cadet; Tomas Medder, WTP/Comer; Simon Bonny, Junior Max; Stephen Goguelin, 100 Formula A; Terry Vautier, 125 Super.

ATHLETICS: The Jersey Spartan Athletic Club returned from the Wessex League competition in Bournemouth yesterday with wins in the three age groups that they entered.

U13 athlete Stephanie Le Ruez won Female Athlete of the Match for her grade 1 high jump of 1.40m and Zane Duquemin won Male Athlete of the Match for his grade 1 discus throw of 27.42m.

The U13 girls won with 120 points ahead of Camberley with 99 points.

The U13 boys attained 130 points, with Camberley second, again with 99 points and the U15 boys won with 141 points, a massive 32 ahead of second placed Bournemouth, who scored 109.
