CLOSE to 1,000 people chanted ‘Walker out’ in the Royal Square this morning as they vented their anger at proposed tax increases and threats to public sector jobs.
They had earlier marched from the People’s Park in a protest organised by the Transport and General Workers Union and led by local official Nick Corbel.
On the day States Members were due to start debating the proposed new tax structure, members of the TGWU and other Islanders gathered in the square to let the Island’s government know that they are well and truly opposed to the proposals put forward by the Finance and Economics Committee.
Although the rest of the event was generally peaceful and good-natured, the protesters reserved their only really hostile receptions for Finance president Senator Terry Le Sueur and Policy and Resources president Senator Frank Walker.
When Senator Walker arrived at about 9.15 am, he was greeted by a cacophony of boos and jeers.
The protesters then launched into the chant ‘Walker out’ which was repeated for some moments as the Senator shook hands with union leaders before giving media interviews.
