PUBLIC Services have been fined £2,000 after heavy rainfall caused sewerage to overflow into Goose Green Marsh last December.
The committee, who are responsible for enforcing the Water Pollution law under which they were charged, were fined by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, after Assistant Magistrate Ian Christmas heard that they had been given a formal warning about a pollution incident on the site last year.
The court also heard that part of the land would not be fit to use for at least another year.
Both Environment and Public Services Committee president Senator Philip Ozouf and Public Services chief officer John Richardson were in court for the sentencing under Article 17(2) of the Water Pollution Law, and saw video evidence recorded by Channel Television at the time.
The £2,000 fine is below the £5,000 limit for the Magistrate’s Court, but under the law the maximum fine is unlimited and offenders can spend up to two years in prison.
