THE NatWest 72-hole strokeplay competition was a triumph for Royal Jersey, with Gavin O’Neill beating fellow club member Christy McLaughlin by just one stroke at La Moye on Saturday
The match went to the wire, and it was O’Neill’s winning four-foot putt on the last hole that meant he avoided the play-off.
O’Neill and Paul Le Chevalier were two shots ahead of McLaughlin, on 223, as they went into the final round, but Le Chevalier then fell away, finishing with a final round of 72.
McLaughlin, meanwhile, birdied the par five 16th to get within one shot of O’Neill, but the leader held his nerve on the 18th, to take the title with a total score of 295.
Also in the winners’ enclosure were junior Royal Jersey members Giles Robin and Piers de Gruchy, with the top two places in the 36-hole individual handicap competition.
They both got round with scores of 147 but Robin had the better second round of 66.
Rob Leader, of Royal Jersey said: ‘It’s been a clean sweep for us, winning all the competitions here - the individual strokeplay, the team competitions, both handicap and scratch, and the individual handicap - which is an excellent achievement, especially playing at La Moye, which is a slightly longer course than ours at Grouville.
We’ve topped these competitions for the last few years with our players producing some terrific results.’
