Weekend sport in brief

TENNIS: Despite drawing 12 matches all at the weekend, Jersey lost out on lifting or sharing the inter-insular Bucktrout Trophy as holders Guernsey retain the cup under the competition’s rules.

The annual double’s tournament was played on Sunday at the Caesarean Tennis Club.

Jersey won the men’s doubles 5-3, while they lost the ladies’ doubles 3-5 and both teams drew four matches each in the mixed.

WHIPPET RACING: Nineteen entrants turned out for the Club’s July Handicap Race Meeting held at the JEP West Show yesterday.

In the main final four-dog race, despite being one of the most highly handicapped, Comanche (Sue and Richard Slous) ran brilliantly, covering the 80 yard course in 4 seconds, to win his first trophy of the year.

He was followed across the line by Coyote (Steve Lawson), Khia (Alan Modral) and Casino (Jean Burr).

The consolation race winners were Capuccina (Steve Lawson), Jetstream (Jenny Thomas) and Laddie (Margaret Coxshall).

GOLF: The result of the Demi Golf Society M Hanley Trophy competition played under the bogey format at St Clement’s Golf and Sports Centre on Saturday saw Jorge Moniz finish three up for top place.

Next was Kenny Mitchell, also 3-up off a 12 handicap and third was Richard Cornick who finished one up.

TENNIS: The Caesarean Tennis Club’s Kia National Club League team obliterated the opposition from David Lloyd Nottingham 4-0 to go forward, for the second successive year, to the finals which will be played in the UK in September.

GOLF: In the annual junior Silverman Trophy competition, which was played at La Moye yesterday, Seb Brown won the scratch competition with 77.

Piers de Gruchy finished with 78, as did in-form Gyles Robin, currently in excellent form.

Winner of the handicap section was Greg Layzell with 71, the same as runner-up Nick House, while Craig Beeley finished third on 72.

GOLF: Winner of the St Clements GC’s July medal competition was Richard Scorer with a nett 55 off a 19 handicap.

In second place was Andy Wiseman with a nett 56 off 9 handicap and in third place, with nett 57 off 20 handicap was Shug McGinness.

SWIMMING: Jersey’s AIB Tigers fought off a strong challenge from Beau Séjour Barracudas of Guernsey to retain the Merrill Lynch CI championship title yet again - by a slender four-point margin - while Jersey Swimming Club fought off the challenge of Guernsey Swimming Club to finish third.

Five new records were set in the 50 event championships.

GOLF: Robin Troy and Frank Lucock won the Jimmy Stones Salvers 2004 competition at the Royal Jersey yesterday with a score of 46 points.

Second were Rob Kelly and David Firby with 44 and in third place, with 43 points, were Steve Vincent and Eric Le Riche.

GOLF: Alan Day won the Its got to be Gordons golf competition at Wheatlands on Saturday with 37 points and Pat Creighton won the Mallard Trophy with 38 points.
