FORM over the next two weeks is crucial for those cricketers hoping to make the inter-insular squad, according to confirmed captain Meeku Patidar.
The 30-year-old, who described his captaincy as a ‘great honour’ has said that there are still a number of players in consideration for the final few places ahead of next month’s match.
Jersey take on Guernsey on home soil on 7 August and are looking to beat their nearest rivals for the first time in two years.
Teenager Peter Gough has been named as vice-captain.
Patidar, who works in client relations at Mourants, believes this year there is enough ability and experience to snatch the trophy from Guernsey.
‘I am a great believer in youth - in my eyes if you are good enough you are old enough,’ said Patidar.
‘Although I think most people won’t be surprised with the squad, there will be some surprises in the order on the day.
Appointment ‘However, form over the closing two weeks of the weekend league is crucial as the selectors have run some names by me for the squad but there are still one or two people we are taking a close look at.’ Speaking about his appointment as captain, he added: ‘This is a new challenge for me.
Although I have played in inter-insular matches before, this is the first time that I have been captain and I think that will help me stay very focused on the day.
‘My job will be to motivate the players and get them prepared.
We have the talent and the right blend of youngsters and senior players to rely on.
I think the youngsters will learn a lot from the seniors and hopefully the seniors will be pushed just that little bit further by the presence of the youngsters.’
