Rowing:Sark to Jersey attracts over 40 craft

THE highlight of the rowing season, the 38th running of the Sark to Jersey, takes place tomorrow.

Organised between the Jersey Rowing Club and the Bonne Nuit Boat Owners Association, the event will feature around 125 competitors in over 40 boats.

The boats range from single seaters up to four-crew coxed boats, with the vast majority entered from Jersey and Guernsey, who battle it out to win the inter insular Le Poidevin trophy, which has been held by Jersey over the past couple of years.

The 19-mile course starts from Dixcart Bay in the south of Sark, passing west of the Paternosters reef and finishing by the harbour entrance of Bonne Nuit on Jersey’s north coast.

Even in flat calm conditions the rowers traditionally have to contend with choppy tidal overflows shortly after leaving the inshore waters of Sark and the strong tides and shallow waters surrounding the Paternosters Reef can make for tricky rowing conditions.

The traditional fixed-seat classes will start at 2.30 pm, 30 minutes before the faster sliding-seat classes.

If weather conditions are good some of the boats should break the two-hour mark and start arriving at Bonne Nuit from 4.30 pm onwards.

Anyone wishing to view the action, can get good vantage points on the north coast where you can see the boats running in towards Bonne Nuit.

Evian Water are giving support to the event.
