OLD Victorians took the prize scalp of champions Sporting Club on Saturday as the NatWest Weekend League Division I season came to a close.
But it’s not over for Jersey’s clubs as the top four now play in the KPMG Channel Islands Club Championship against Guernsey’s leading four teams.
Jersey’s OVs defeated SCF by 40 runs to consolidate second place.
Romerils finish third after they beat Caesareans by six wickets while St Ouen crept into fourth spot after defeating Old Codgers.
Rovers won Guernsey’s league championship on Saturday as a result of Cobo failing to beat Optimists.
Cobo placed second, Optimists third and Wanderers, last season’s champions, fourth.
The opening matches in the CI championship are on Saturday, SCF play Wanderers at Grainville; Romerils hostCobo at FB1 while Old Victorians and St Ouen are both in Guernsey against Optimists and Rovers respectively.
OVs skipper Chris Jones said: ‘It was a good win against Sporting Club and to be fair it was the best we’ve played all season.
We batted well and set up a good total and we defended it well.
‘Andy Dewhurst got the key wickets of Steve Carlyon and Matt Hague fairly early and for a change we didn’t panic and kept the pressure on throughout.
‘We now have the CI Championship to look forward too and hopefully we can play as well in every game.
We do have a young side out for our first game but we have the ability and hopefully we can start with a win.’ Jones scored 50 against SCF with Ward Jenner and Peter Gough batting well for 68 and 43 respectively.
The trio struck 13 boundaries between them with Jenner leading the way with eight.
Sporting Club were bowled out for the first time this season finishing on 191 after 43.1 overs.
Bertie Broughton took three wickets with Chris Searson, Jonny Gough and Andy Dewhurst each collecting two.
Jones added: ‘It was Chris Searson’s last game before moving to live in France.
He has served the OVs well over the years and he will be sorely missed, because in every match this season he has delivered his ten overs for less than 30 runs.’ Martin Higgins top-scored for SCF with an undefeated 49.
Nigel Crocker and John Prince helped Romerils home with seven balls to spare against Caesareans at FB1.
Both batsmen were homing in on deserved half centuries before Crocker attempted to cut a short-pitched delivery and was caught behind by Myles West.
The umpires decided that the delivery was not a no ball therefore a promising 95-run partnership was ended.
Earlier Caesareans made a great recovery to finish on 200 after being 28 runs for four wickets.
Teenager Marc Whitsey impressed with 58 while Stuart Ramskill supported with 55.
Newly-appointed Island captain Meeku Patidar went for just one run after Nigel Crocker got a ball to cut back in and dislodge Patidar’s left stump.
Romerils openers Mark Saralis and Ian Crocker played some fine shots to put on 94 runs for the first wicket.
Crocker eventually went for 45 while Saralis went on to make 71.
John Prince had a good knock too, making an undefeated 35.
Excellent bowling all round restricted an under-strength Old Codgers to 136 for 8 against St Ouen on pitch one at Les Quennevais.
Paul Horton’s seven-over spell resulted in four maidens but not wickets for just five runs.
Danny Blasco and Karl Moyse both took three wickets before opener Dave Morfee guided St Ouen to victory with and undefeated 60 off 51 balls.
Morfee and Simon Varley (40 not out) put on an unbroken third-wicket partnership of 104.
Springfield made it five wins in five outings in Division II after they won by 90 runs against St Ouen Reserves yesterday at FB1.
Peter Canham (35) and Suthan (53) put on 81 for the first wicket before a late 43 from Richard Parker - off just 12 scoring shots including five 4s and three 6s - resulted in Springfield reaching 206 for 6.
Bottom-placed St Ouen, who played one short, were never allowed to get going and they stuttered to 116 for 8 in their 40 overs.
Catch of the match was a blinder in the gully by Tim Kearsey.
Old Victorians Reserves moved into second place, six points behind Springfield, after they defeated Lord’s Taverners JJCA by 13 runs at Grainville.
Marc Whitsey scored an excellent 113 for the JJCA after Oliver Hughes (74), Tom Minty (44) and Matthew Kalman (40) all batted well for OVs.
Whitsey also took four wickets for 37 runs while Richard Blackburn grabbed four for 41.
Tom Wherry and Tom Minty both took three wickets for OVs.
