Plan calls for tight spending controls

TIGHT controls on government spending for the next five years are central to the States Resource Plan published today.

And the Island’s government now has to win the battle to persuade its workforce not to make wage claims that will take government spending above a projected 2.5 per cent spending increase ceiling.

According to the figures, the cost of providing government services this year will be £456m.

Total income is projected at £441m, leaving a deficit of £15m for 2004.

Policy and Resources Committee president Senator Frank Walker said: ‘The focus in the five-year plan must be to bring spending growth back into line with forecasts of States’ revenues, particularly to ensure that States finances are in the right shape to tackle medium-term challenges.’
