How the three Rs changed my life

HIGHLANDS College is celebrating the remarkable story of one of its most extraordinary students.

When she first stepped through the college gates six years ago Anne Kent could not read or write.

For 37 years everything, from bus timetables to food labels and newspapers, might as well have been written in Japanese.

For the once shy and severely dyslexic schoolgirl, who was bullied by pupils and largely ignored by staff, going back to the classroom took a huge amount of courage.

Standing up and admitting that she could not do what the vast majority take for granted was one of the hardest steps of her life.

But this September, Anne will be visiting the House of Lords to receive the Helena Kennedy Foundation special badged bursary, having been chosen from a field of thousands for the top award, which celebrates the achievements of ‘non-traditional leavers’.

The foundation encourages people from diverse backgrounds to enter higher education.
