No plans yet for single operator ferry system

HARBOURS and Airport have no immediate intention of allowing just one operator on the St Malo ferry route, president Senator Len Norman told the States yesterday.

Replying to a question from Deputy Gerard Baudains, he said that they would not be acting on the recent Oxera report - which suggested that the Island would be better served by a single operator and changing its regulatory system - until all parties had been consulted.

Senator Norman said that passenger figures were up and the St Malo service was more reliable; moreover, the Island could not act in isolation without considering Guernsey arrangements.

‘The Oxera report is a complex document,’ said Senator Norman.

‘Basically it is suggesting that every three to five years we should put each route out to tender, with the tender being based on the deal a potential operator is prepared to offer the travelling public.
