Football:Door still open for Jersey hopefuls - Bournemouth coach

SIXTEEN-year-old striker Brett Pitman scored all Jersey’s under-18s goals in a 4-1 victory against AFC Bournemouth’s under-17s last night.

At the IJ Bathe Field in St Saviour, Pitman showed his goal-scoring flair against players he was training with last week after spending a week at the League Two south-coast club.

Jon Welsh’s side, featuring a handful of players who will not be eligible for the age group this season, gave a fine account of themselves.

Joe Roche, head of youth at Bournemouth said: ‘The door is still open for a couple of Jersey players at Bournemouth and Brett is one of them.

‘He doesn’t work as hard as some want but you can’t question his finishing, he produced to clinical finishes last night and that’s why clubs are paying attention to him.

‘He played for us against Oxford but to be fair to him he wasn’t given the greatest of services as the majority of players who played that day played as individuals and not as a team.

‘The Jersey side last night were older and stronger than us and they played to a good level.

Many of our lads were trialists late last season and after a few weeks of training this was the first game for many of them.

‘A few Jersey lads did well and we’re building a relationship with St Paul’s FC and the Island.

There is a crop of talent here and we are happy to provide the opposition to see it.’ AFC Bournemouth’s U19s play a St Paul’s FC senior team tonight, at the IJB at 6.30, with former Jersey Scottish and Island midfielder Charlie Smith making his début for the Saints after signing for them on Tuesday.
