Herbert sparkles as England U16s lift silver

JERSEY schoolgirl Jamey Herbert impressed for England U16s in the recent European age group tournament at Millfield School.

Hosts England topped their group with a 5-1 win against Lithuania and then a 13-0 thrashing of Poland, with Herbert operating as striker scoring in both matches.

The last group game against Spain was far tighter and ended scoreless, with England topping the group on goal difference and moving through, with Spain, to a final grouping of four teams.

England had an impressive 2-0 victory against a strong French side, but went on to lose to Holland 4-1 despite a spirited performance.

With the Dutch securing competition gold the last-minute goal that England scored against them, proved vital in claiming the silver medal.

Spain collected the bronze.

Herbert played in every game and thoroughly enjoyed her second international tournament of the season and has now won a total of nine caps in her first year of international hockey.

Following two holding camps, Jamey’s older sister Rebecca has been selected to play in the European U21 Junior Nations Cup to be held in Dublin from 25 - 31 July.

England are already preparing in Dublin and as well as training have had a preparation match against Spain.

England meet Germany, France and Belarus in the group stages.

The Netherlands, Spain, Ireland and Scotland compete in the other group.

Cross-over matches take place next Friday with finals the following day.
