Infill inquiry: Farmer breaks his silence

TRINITY farmer Charles Gallichan broke down in tears as he concluded his evidence to the Canavan inquiry yesterday.

With protesting residents sitting just feet away, Mr Gallichan expressed the hope that the inquiry would clear him of allegations that have been made since he won approval to level five fields and build a reservoir on his farm.

Some have claimed that the scheme was not, as he insisted yesterday, for agricultural purposes - they have alleged that it was a commercial tip and had always been planned as such.

He has been accused of deceiving and misleading the planning authorities, the politicians and the parish, and until yesterday Mr Gallichan had not uttered a single public word in his own defence.

But in just under two hours of evidence to the inquiry being conducted by Carol Canavan, he sought to disprove the allegations against him, point by point.
