Petition demands 2005 Muratti returns to Track

THE Cherry Godfrey Muratti Vase football final could make a dramatic return to the Track next May, writes Gareth Le Prevost.

Rangers have written to the Guernsey Football Association asking for the showpiece occasion to be moved from Foote’s Lane back to the Victoria Avenue ground.

And Rangers appear to have the backing of several other parties.

GFA secretary Matt Fallaize said: ‘At the June council meeting we received a letter from Rangers requesting future Murattis to be played at the Track.

‘But rather than a knee jerk reaction to that letter, it was decided to contact interested parties - the Sports Commission, the island coach [Steve Ogier], Culture and Leisure, sponsors and the Amalgamated committee - asking them for their views by the middle of July.

‘Other council members were asked to submit their views with the view of having a properly informed decision on the whole subject at council in September.’ That meeting is to be held on Thursday 2 September and Fallaize revealed ‘indications are that opinion is fairly split’ from the feedback he had received.

Foote’s Lane hosted its first Muratti last year and reaction to the venue was mixed, with many spectators complaining about the distance they were from the action and the consequent lack of atmosphere.

Following that occasion, the late Nigel Gavey started a petition to record the signatories ‘dissatisfaction with Foote’s Lane as a venue for local football matches’.

The petition of 850 was recently handed over to the GFA.
