Cricket:Dewhurst and Blackburn get inter-island call-up

JERSEY will field two new caps against Guernsey in the Cherry Godfrey Challenge at Grainville on Saturday week.

They are Old Victorians all rounder Andrew Dewhurst and Romerils pace bowler Peter Blackburn.

The pair secured their places following good performances in Jersey B-team’s four-run inter-insular victory away to Guernsey on Sunday.

The full team is: Steve Carlyon, Chris Jones, Peter Gough, Meeku Patidar (captain), Andrew Dewhurst, Ben Silva, Tony Carlyon, Mark Saralis, Simon Short, Paul Horton and Peter Blackburn.

Jonny Gough is twelfth man.

Jersey will be looking to avoid three successive defeats - and they will have to do it without Australian Matt Hague.

The opener and three-times Cricketer of the Year is unavailable as he is out of the Island.

Old Victorian Ward Jenner, who has captained both islands in recent years, has failed to make the team for the second consecutive year.

Island manager David Gorman, who selected the team with Keith Dennis, said: ‘Several players are extremely unlucky to miss out, among them Ward Jenner, Stuart Ramskill and Bradley Vowden.

‘Ward is nearly 40 now and we’ve gone for young players and Ward understands that.

It’s the policy that has been adopted this year to give the youth a chance and they proved they can get results with the excellent B-team result in Guernsey on Sunday.

‘The team is very well balanced and captain Meeku Patidar has a number of different bowling options open to him.

It’s a strong batting side as well.

‘I’m sure Meeku will use the options open to him and confident he will get the best out of the players for the match.

‘I was very encouraged by the performances of Andrew Dewhurst and Peter Blackburn last weekend and they are in the team by virtue of their displays in the B-team game.’ Jersey’s XI shows four changes from last year - Dave Gorman, Mark Reynolds, Hague and Ramskill being replaced by Dewhurst, Blackburn, Ben Silva and Peter Gough.

The inter-insular, which starts at 10.45 am, is 50-overs-a-side.
