AT the Jersey Rugby Football Club’s annual general meeting a week last Thursday more details were given about the continued celebrations of the 125th anniversary which runs into next season, while after four years as president Mike Engleman stood down to be replaced by David Lapidus.
There were other changes to the executive committee and, as the success of the youth and minis’ section has seen numbers increase from 250 players to over 300, a three-year development plan has been written which will be implemented under new chairman, David Kaye.
To a large extent the future of the club rests with junior players moving through the age groups to the seniors, which is one of the reasons why club chairman, Chris Scott, who was re-elected for his third term in office, said that: ‘it is important that the committee tries to arrange more games at home and away (for the juniors) than we have ever done.’ For the seniors he echoed the general mood of the meeting by stressing ‘one goal that we are all agreed to work towards is winning London South West Division III.
In the view of all, we have, on paper, the best chance we have ever had of achieving this.’ Apart from closer ties with Richmond RFC which will see an inaugural golf match between Jersey and the Richmond Heavies Golf Society later this summer, other events to look out for include the following: Saturday 7 August, pre-season friendly v Bradford Bees RFC; Sat 14 August, friendly v Chichester RFC; Wed 8 September, 125th Celebration Match v RAF; Sun 3 October, Vets Super 10’s finals; Fri 15 October, 125th Celebrations Wooden Spoon Golf and dinner; Sat 16 October, 125th Celebration Match v Wooden Spoon XV followed by 125th Anniversary Ball at the Hotel De France; Sat 27 November, 125th Celebration Match v Royal Artillery.
Meanwhile, after Dai Burton was appointed club coach for a third year, Jane Baines was awarded the Barry Coulson Trophy for her services to the youth and minis’ section.
Main executive: President, David Lapidus; Chairman, Chris Scott; Vice-chairman, Kiran Patel; Treasurer, Eric Axford; Secretary, Chris Lynch; Fixtures secretary, Kate Adams; Membership secretary, Mary Medcalf; Business manager, Adam Budworth; House and social manager, Sean Murphy; Youth and minis’ representative, David Kaye; Players’ representative, Danny Curzons; Premises manager, Dave Henry; Members’ representative, Tony Hurford; Club captain, Rad Montgomery; chair of 125th anniversary committee, Ken Hewitt; Secretary, Paul Sanderson.
On behalf of Richmond RFC, one of the oldest established rugby club’s in the UK, Andrew Gordon sent the following to chairman Chris Scott: ‘The “”old man”" Richmond (formed in 1861) wishes the “”young upstart”" Jersey all the best on achieving 125 years of great hospitality and fine rugby and hopes that you will prosper for many more years to come.’
