Bowling:Island triples battle to historic victory over South Africa

JERSEY’S bowlers, enjoying a rest day today before tomorrow’s positional play-offs in pairs and triples, are reflecting on a hard day’s play on the Ayr Northfield greens yesterday.

The highlight was an historic triples win over South Africa for Alan Shaw, Lee Nixon and David Le Marquand - a perfect way to complete their second phase qualifying group programme.

The victory appeared unlikely when the Jersey trio dropped a five on the 13th end, but they battled back to 15-15, then dropped a single on the penultimate end before picking up a winning double on the 16th for a 17-16 result.

Earlier, the Island triple had beaten Kenya, 28-16, and the two late wins were enough to lift Jersey off the bottom of the table, to set them up for an overall ninth place play-off against Swaziland on Saturday.

Derek Boswell and Allan (AQ) Quemard, who were drawn in the pairs section-from-hell, could not raise a win in their five games, but that was no disgrace against such opponents as Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, South Africa and Israel.

Even the proud defending champions, George Sneddon and Alex Marshall from the host country, finished third in the group, which was won by Ireland’s Noel Graham and Jim Baker.

n In tomorrow’s play-offs, Boswell and Quemard will take on a pair from the Philippines for 11th place in the overall pecking order.
