THE eight Island teenagers taking part in Hobie Dragoon World Championships in Duinbergen, Belgium, certainly had varying conditions yesterday.
Light breezes were followed by an almost cyclonic blast and a 180 degree turnaround which eventually reached up to Force 5! In such unfriendly elements none of the Jersey boats finished the last race but they, as the other teams, can discard one race from their initial two days’ sailing.
This means that after six races the highest-placed Jersey team is Alex Pearce (16) and Leon Pearce (13) in tenth place followed by Simon Thébault (15) and Luke Carney (14) in 12th; Francesca Eddy (16) and Jodie Carney (13) in 14th place and Jamie Riddock (15) and Rory Rice (14) in 18th.
Twenty-three teams are competing but such was the strength of the wind yesterday that three other boats were damaged and today’s races were delayed by an hour, partly to allow time for them to be repaired.
‘We have had a couple of fourth places,’ said Julie Pearce from Belgium today, ‘but to give you an example of the competition, the leading pair, from England, have finished 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2.
That means that their discard race was for second place!
