Portuguese Food Fair is called off

THERE will be no Portuguese Food Fair this year.

The organisers have been unable to find a site and have decided to skip a year - but they intend to be back in 2005.

For the last three years they have used what became known as the Les Pas site on the waterfront, but stallholders said that it was not ideal because of the dust and lack of facilities.

This year was also the first that the site was not owned by the States following its gifting to Les Pas, and the company had asked the organisers to make a £2,000 donation to charity which they said they could not afford.

The organisers had hoped to use the People’s Park instead, but St Helier Constable Simon Crow-croft said that this would be unfair on the nearby residents who also have to put up with the Battle funfair on their doorsteps for the next three weeks.

Parade Gardens was also discussed, but this was felt to be too small and too close to people’s houses.
