Row breaks out in Weymouth

FIREFIGHTERS will be facing a new challenge this weekend when they take part in a charity rowing venture from Weymouth to Jersey.

A team of 21 firefighters and six support staff are involved in the event, the first - and more comfortable - leg of which will start with departure by Condor for Poole.

From there, they transfer to Weymouth and on to the army landing craft where their rowing challenge will begin.

Plans for this big charity challenge, which will bring in funds for Headway Jersey, Age Concern and Jersey Hospice Care, have been taking place for some months and yesterday some of the firefighters were putting in last-minute practice in the new rowing room at Fort Regent.

The plan is for teams of six rowers and a cox to complete two hours at a time, with the final group due to arrive back in the Island on Monday at around 6 pm.

Challenge co-ordinator Nicki Brown said they had already raised over £1,800 and that special collecting sessions would be taking place today and on Monday at Checkers, today at the Co-op at St Peter and on Monday at Grande Marché Co-op.

Donations, made payable to the Jersey Fire and Rescue Rowing Challenge, may be sent to Nicki Brown at Fire Service headquarters in Rouge Bouillon.
