PARISH Deputies will be scrapped and Constables removed from the States Chamber under plans finally agreed by the special committee on composition reform.
After a stormy two-hour meeting yesterday, which saw the special committee on the brink of resignation, they agreed to back a six super-constituency scheme with 48 States Members to start in 2008.
But even then, only three out of six Members voted to put the scheme forward and none of them seemed happy to commit to it.
A formal proposition will be lodged next month.
After the special committee agreed the six super-constituency scheme, its president, Deputy Roy Le Hérissier , said: ‘It has been incredibly hard.
I do not think for a moment it will be easy in the States.
I have got no problem in seeing a good debate about the merits of the parochial system as it relates to the States and separate constituencies.’
