WHILE Allan Quémard lost both his second phase qualifying group matches at the world outdoor bowls championships in Ayr yesterday, the Jersey four notched up a couple of exciting victories as they challenged for the triples’ plate.
Indeed, Alan Shaw, Derek Boswell, David Le Marquand and Lee Nixon have won all three of their matches so far, and are sitting pretty at the top of the section D league table.
If they can find their best form today against Hong Kong and Fiji, they should clinch a place in the plate final, and could finish as high as 12th overall.
Yesterday morning saw a repeat of their qualifying group meeting with the lively Samoans, but while they had previously struggled to win, the Jersey quartet this time sailed to a comfortable 29-9 victory.
Against Zimbabwe, it was a different story.
This was a close encounter, leading to a narrow 18-16 win that kept Jersey’s unbeaten record intact.
AQ’s hopes of avenging the previous day’s heavy defeat by South Africa’s Donny Piketh were dashed, although the Jersey star managed to return a more respectable 21-11 scoreline.
The class of the singles field was clear in the afternoon, when he came up against England hope Steve Farish, and managed to score just seven shots, before the Cumbrian finished on 21.
The second phase qualifying rounds will be completed today, and the overall placings in the fours will be decided tomorrow (FRI), followed by the prestigious singles’ play-offs on Saturday.
