JERSEY’S Roy Smith was delighted with his fifth-place finish in the first race of the World 2-litre powerboat championships in Sweden yesterday evening.
Smith, defending his world title, did not expect such a high finish in the opening race of three, a short, inland course on flat waters that do not favour his monohull craft.
As it was he was bettered only by four catamarans and will have the conditions in his favour tonight for race two, held offshore in Nynashamn, in the Baltic.
Smith and English navigator Dave Simpkins tackle the 96-mile course at 5 pm.
