THE running of St Helier’s Welfare Work scheme has been criticised by regional industrial organiser Nick Corbel and some union members.
Mr Corbel claimed that under the current system the parish ‘wants work on the cheap and they are not going to get it’.
Running for six months, the scheme now has ten members on its books.
Those people have opted to carry out work for the parish in return for welfare payments.
The system works by those people doing three weeks work for the parish in return for their welfare payment, and if that work has gone well they may be given the opportunity to work extra hours for extra cash.
The Constable Simon Crowcroft said that those on the work scheme were not being employed by the parish and were effectively volunteers.
