JERSEY’S bowlers made history at Ayr Northfield yesterday, when they struck gold in the new Plate event, which has been staged for the first time this year.
In front of a large and appreciative crowd, the Jersey quartet of Alan Shaw, Derek Boswell, David Le Marquand and Lee Nixon defeated Arie Ben-Dor, Zvike Hadar, Colin Silberstein and Raymond Sher, 17-11, in the Plate final.
Israel opened with five shots over the first three ends, but Jersey took the lead at 6-5, after six ends, and were 12-10 ahead after 14.
Scoring a double on the 15th, Nixon’s men dropped a single on the 16th, but went into the last two ends with a cushion of three shots, and made sure of victory with a double and a single.
The Plate was introduced to give those teams who failed to qualify for the second phase championship round-robin a chance to continue in the event, and as a way of ensuring that the ranking order could be completed for all 24 teams.
The Plate medallists were given the accolade of receiving their medals in an impressive ceremony, and the feisty Jersey team earned their moment of glory on the winners’ podium.
‘I’m proud of the way the lads have fought through the last two weeks, and it’s great for them to be able to return to the Channel Islands with medals around their necks,’ said Jersey team manager Cyril Renouf.
Ireland won the fours title yesterday, beating Australia in the final, while England defeated New Zealand in the third place play-off.
Today sees the singles final between Scotland’s world No 1, Alex Marshall, and Australia’s Steve Glasson, who was runner up to Jeremy Henry four years ago.
