Cricket:Silva places faith in young squad

THE Four Islands cricket festival in Guernsey next week is almost as big as the inter-insular, according to the captain of the Jersey Island Cricket Club squad Ben Silva.

‘This is a fantastic opportunity for us to take part in a really big event,’ Silva said.

‘We didn’t play at the last one, so we’ve worked really hard to get a squad together this time.

All the other teams, Guernsey, the Isle of Wight and the Isle of Man, will have very strong sides.

We’ve gone for a younger side; we have some highly-talented youngsters in the squad, and six players from the senior Island side, and playing as a team at this level will help Jersey cricket, especially for the big matches like the inter-insular.’ He said that the Isle of Wight and the Isle of Man are unknown quantities, but their teams are expected to be very strong.

‘A lot of very good juniors have come from the Isle of Wight,’ he said.

But he has every faith in his team’s abilities.

‘I would like to think that if we play to our best then we can do very well,’ he said.

‘We’ve got the Crockers, and Rohan Mohanty is back in the Island.

Plus we have the Goughs and Jack Waters and Peter Blackburn, and the experienced players like Chris Jones and Andy Dewhurst, and the team get on extremely well with each other.’ Silva said that he is very much looking forward to the competition.

‘I think it’ll be excellent.

To play very good opposition on consecutive days will be a wonderful opportunity,’ he said.

JICC: Ben Silva (Captain), Peter Gough (Vice-Captain), Tom Perchard, Ian Crocker, Nigel Crocker, Jonny Gough, Rohan Mohanty, Danny Bertram, Paul Gales, Peter Blackburn, Richard Gomersall, Jack Waters, Chris Jones, Andy Dewhurst.
