Data fears over TV ticket agency

THE agency which allocated tickets for ITV’s Simply The Best could be investigated for data protection infractions by the UK’s information watchdog.

ApplauseStore.com owns probably the most comprehensive and valuable database ever compiled in Jersey as a result of thousands of people registering to get tickets for the show which was filmed on the St Helier waterfront this summer.

They have tens of thousands of mobile numbers, e-mail addresses and pieces of personal information at their disposal and the company are now using the database to contact people with other TV-related promotions.

Jersey’s data protection registrar, Emma Martins, says they may have broken the law, but the company insist they have done nothing wrong.

She has referred them to the UK Information Commissioner, Elizabeth France, and has told the JEP: ‘From a data protection point of view, it doesn’t look particularly healthy.

The Information Commissioner is looking into it.’
