Football:St Ouen pull of Charity Cup shock

CHAMPIONS Jersey Scottish kicked-off their season with a 1-0 win over Portuguese Club last night, while newly-promoted St Ouen upset Jersey Wanderers by beating them on their home turf 6-3.

Scottish’s Charity Cup first-round victory at Les Quennevais was secured by a Ross Crick penalty on 15 minutes after Mark Brown was brought down in the box.

‘We played quite well in the first half and moved the ball around positively,’ said Scottish manager Bob Kearsey.

‘We made quite a few chances and should have scored a couple more times - but in the second half we had people tiring in key areas and the last 45 minutes could have gone either way.

‘We had quite a few injuries - including Ryan Lumsden, Ali Santos, Craig Ferey and Dave Brodie - but we still played well which shows how strong our squad is.’ Portuguese manager Marco Varela said that, despite the loss, he was not disappointed by his team’s performance.

‘Considering we lost to Grouville 5-0 at the weekend and we were facing Scottish, our attitude, passion and ability was there for all to see.

The lads just got on with the job and I was quite happy.

‘We have a strong squad fitness-wise and I now need to work to develop a few players football-wise.

It will take time, but it will come.’ Danny Craven scored two cracking goals for the St Ouen against Wanderers.

Joe Murphy also hit a brace and Ross Marquis and Scott Quarrell hit a goal apiece.

In reply, Chris Andrews scored twice and Duncan Price was on target for Wanderers.

It was a winning return to managing for Allan Ferey, who took the reins from Steve Pallett last week after the former coach stepped down to concentrate on work and triathlon.

‘The whole squad played brilliantly and worked really hard on what was quite a difficult pitch,’ said Ferey.

‘Everyone put in 110 per cent effort and we deserved to win.

We play Scottish in the next round and if not causing a upset then at least we are capable of giving them a run for their money.’ A disappointed Wanderers manager Martyn Stratford said his team lacked commitment on the night and were perhaps a bit naive.

‘We started off battling and deserved to take our 1-0 lead but after that we basically stopped playing,’ he said.

‘But I have a strong squad and I’m confident we can learn from this and put things right.’ Tonight (6 pm) St Peter v Beeches (St Peter); Jersey Nomads v Grouville (LQ); Trinity v Rozel Rovers (Trinity).

All matches kick off at 6 pm.
