A UK authority on waste management says that Jersey far exceeds the UK in producing energy from waste.
Professor Jim Swithenbank, who has been appointed as principal adviser to the scrutiny panel into Environment and Public Services proposed solid waste strategy, also said that people should not reject incineration as part of waste management as such plants were performing well and meeting strict environmental standards throughout Europe.
‘It is worth saying that Jersey is very good in that sector compared to the UK.
The UK is getting energy from waste at between five to ten per cent, while some countries are around 50 per cent.
Jersey, at the moment, must be somewhere around 70 per cent.’ However, he added, producing energy in that way came at a cost and societies must decide how much they were willing to pay.
