THE Ansbacher Channel Islands athletics team is competing in the Golden Jubilee Plate final of the British Athletics League tomorrow - and they are aiming for victory.
The Plate competition runs alongside the Cup final of the same competition, with the Plate being contested by the top eight teams in the UK which do not compete in the National league while the Cup is the prize to be won by one of the top National league athletics clubs.
Team coach Andrew Winnie said that a full team will be going, although some of the regulars are out due to injury.
‘We had a bye in the preliminary round and went straight through to the semi-finals.
The computer came up with the top eight non-league clubs from scores over the season and we were among them.’ The team consists of U17, U20 and senior men and women, among them AAAs silver-medallist Kylie Robilliard; Jersey’s National schools discus gold-medallist Lauren Thérin, and Simon Phelan, also a gold-medallist, and Stephen Prosser; and the Garland brothers, Dale and Lee, plus Lee Merrien, and Jersey runner Jo McGarry.
‘We’ll be very competitive, but it’s one of those events where you are competing alongside the Cup athletes and you’re only allowed one athlete per event - and Cup and Plate triple jumpers, for instance, compete on the same track at the same time, each is allowed three jumps, and only the top eight go through to the next round.
It will be the usual ‘cup final atmosphere’ where anything can happen,’ Winnie said, adding: ‘We have a pretty solid team.
We won’t win all the races but we’re optimistic.
Whoever performs well on the day will win.’ Team: Simon Phelan, Stephen Prosser, Kylie Robilliard, Courtney Williams, Stephanie Le Cornu, Laura Arblaster, Lauren Thérin, Jo McGarry, Dale Garland, Lee Garland, Lee Merrien, John Scriven, Kieran Palmer, Ian Carter, Ryan de Haaff, Tom Druce, Steve Dawes, Kamela Monks, Sarah Hume, Emma Batiste, Sadie Addlesee, Michelle Ryan, Natalie Warner, Peter Irving, Fiona Carry.
