Athletes back in action this Saturday

MEMBERS of the Island’s victorious Channel Islands’ Ansbacher athletics team, which won the Golden Jubilee Plate Final at Bedford on Saturday, will be in action again on Sunday in the first multi-event athletics competition to be held at Foote’s Lane in Guernsey.

Younger athletes under 11 years old will also be taking part, as will guest athletes from Bath University, at the invitation of Dale Garland , the Islands’ top decathlete.

The main disciplines covered will be running, throwing and jumping, and the performances of each athlete will be scored according to the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF), as used in decathlon and heptathlon competition, to be added together to give a team result.

While Athletics Development Officer Andrew Winnie is all in favour of this initiative, made possible because of funding by the Royal Bank of Canada, Roger Garman, director and general manager of the RBC in the Channel Islands explained: ‘In North America the Royal Bank of Canada supports amateur athletics as part of its commitment to local communities.

We believe that young people learn important life lessons from involvement in sport, including teamwork, setting goals and personal improvement.’ The event begins at Foote’s Lane, on Sunday, at midday.
