JIM GARRETT won the final Division I Vélo Sport Jersey XL Contracts Evening Track series held at Les Quennevais last Tuesday.
It earned him third place overall in the series, although Jersey’s Commonwealth Youth Games cycling representative Richard Tanguy , in his last season as a junior rider, took overall top position.
In Division II Mick Higginson was the winner on the night and he too finished third overall in the series.
There were only four seniors competing in their race, with Toby Aubert starting his first race of the season but having to pull out after two laps.
This left Stephen King, Bob Cabot and Garrett to battle it out.
Crossing the line behind Garrett was Cabot, with King bringing up the rear.
In the series, Andy Munns was second behind Tanguy, with Garrett third.
Nine riders lined up for the Division II start and, with Paul Lipscombe away but having already secured first place overall, the opportunity was there for Higginson, who was chased home by Peter Derrick in second (he was also second overall) and Sean Twohig, making a welcome return to form, eventually finishing third.
Jemima (Jim) Davis triumphed in the ladies race, on the night and overall, with Mary Crow second and Peter Ilton winning the junior title.
Prior to the two main races, the VSJ welcomed several younger riders who were taking part in a four-lap beginners’ race as part of the club’s ongoing efforts to bring more young people into the sport.
There was a good cross-section of ages and sizes, with all competitors putting in a great effort.
Joel Wroe-Johnson was a convincing winner with Stephanie Auckland and Alex Haine battling it out for second and third - they finished in that order - and Liam Jesson finishing fourth after losing his chain twice.
