A 13-YEAR-OLD girl visiting a friend is believed to have alerted the family that there was a fire in the bedroom of their flat last night.
Two adults and two children had a lucky escape from the flat in Chestnut Court, Le Geyt Road, shortly after 9 pm, when the girl spotted smoke coming from under the bedroom door and warned the others who left the building.
A 51-year-old woman was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.
Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus dealt with the fire - the damage from which was mostly confined to the bedroom.
It is believed the fire started from ‘tea-light’ candles.
Fire and Rescue Service Assistant Divisional Officer John Elliott said it was very fortunate that the occupants of the flat spotted the fire at a very early stage.
It was kept in check by regulation fire doors and a smoke alarm had also sounded.
The Fire Service issued a reminder that, when in use, candles should be placed in a safe container, positioned away from flammable materials and not left unattended.
