TWO teenage boys found themselves clinging on to a moored boat, waiting to be rescued, on the first day of their holiday yesterday after their kayak capsized in St Catherine’s Bay.
Tim Goddard and Adam Buck, who are both aged 15, had taken out the kayak at 1 pm and enjoyed moving around in relatively calm seas until the wind got up.
At this point they tried to make it back to the breakwater.
‘We tried getting back, but the wind was too strong and then the kayak capsized and we both fell in,’ Tim said this morning.
With the kayak upside down and the oars beginning to float off, both boys - who are ‘okay’ swimmers - made a successful effort to retrieve them.
However, they were now starting to feel cold despite the fact that they were wearing wetsuits.
Tim swam towards a nearby moored boat and clung on with one hand while keeping a grip on the kayak, while Adam did the same and gripped the oars.
‘It seemed as if we were far out and we were cold.
‘We started shouting and waving our arms, trying to attract the attention of people on the breakwater,’ Adam said.
Their actions led to the alarm being raised, and both Jersey Fire and Rescue’s inshore rescue boat and St Catherine’s lifeboat were called out.
The boys were taken back to the breakwater in the inshore rescue vessel while the lifeboat crew retrieved the kayak.
