A MAN who admitted buying food with forged £20 notes made by someone he knew was sentenced in the Royal Court on Friday to 12 months in prison suspended for two years.
First offender William Whiteman (62), was caught by the police in October last year after the shopkeeper in St Saviour’s Stores noticed when cashing up that she had been given a forged note.
It was at his second attempt to pass a similar forgery in her shop, and the woman, who knew where he lived, called the police.
Crown Advocate Robin Morris told the court that when arrested, Whiteman had been entirely co-operative and admitted the other occasions on which he had passed forged £20 notes in various shops.
Advocate Morris said that there was powerful mitigation in Whiteman’s favour, including the fact that to a large degree he had written his own indictment.
He called for a one-year prison sentence suspended for two years.
