Weekend sport in brief

JUNIOR GOLF The Jersey junior golf team retained the inter-insular title after defeating their strong Sarnian counterparts nine and a half to seven and a half at L’Ancresse at the weekend.

Jersey had a wobbly start, losing the foursomes (one and a half to two and a half) and the first two fourball competitions on Saturday to trail by three points.

But the jersey lads roared back to win the next two fourballs and six consecutive singles matches for an excellent victory.

BOWLS: Alan Quémard was in impressive form during the Jersey Bowls Association’s men’s finals day at Les Creux at the weekend, winning both the singles and triples event, the latter with Steve Hind and John Lowery.

In an all-JBC singles final he beat Gus McKinnon 21-11 then the JBC as part of an all.

Then, on Sunday morning, the JBC trio of Quémard, Hind and Lowery beat the Les Creux trio of John Skelley, Alan Page and Richard Collinson 21-12.

Meanwhile Karina Bisson went one better in her finals, also at Les Creux, as she won the ladies’ singles title, the triples’ and the pairs’.

SAILING: A-fleet winners in races 9 and 10 of the RCIYC Hobie Fleet Bay Races hed on Sunday in Force 5 winds were Simon Swain and Toby Clancy.

Steves Hayden and Eldred won the B-fleet while Alex and Léon Pearce won the Hobie Dragoons races.

GOLF: Alan Graham and Mick Tostevin won the St Clement’s Golf Club Kenny Blanchard Invitation Open at the St Clement course, with a total of 45 points.

Charlie Fortune and Brian Duffy were second with 44 pts.

GOLF: Jersey Junior Golf team captain Charles Le Sueur continued his winning weekend when he teamed up with Andrew Videgrain tfor overall victory in the La Moye GC Dolphin Trophy competition yesterday, the pair finishing with 36 points.

Sue Denison and Stuart Cameron won the mixed section with 33 pts and Pat O’Connell and Adam Pearce won the men’s section with 34 pts.

BOWLS: Winners of the St Brelade Bowls Club Nixon Shield competition played yesterday were Terry Atkins (skip), Phil Blanchard, Diana Petit and Gladys Leveridge who beat Ken Le Marquand (skip), Frank Doublet, Hazel Derrien and Roger Garnham 8-6.

IRONMAN: Beachguard Leon Hay won the Jersey Longboard Riders Association’s Sixth Beach Ironman competition at St Ouen on Saturday, while Jersey surfer Minky Charlton finished second and Scott Harben came third.

SHOOTING: David Le Quesne won the Summer Prize meeting Grand Aggregate at Crabbé range on Saturday afternoon, eight points clear of Richard Benest.

However it was Benest who was the dominant shot of the day, scoring 299.54, dropping just one point on the 4×75 point shoots, and winning the Shipstone Challenge cup, 75.13, the Gallichan, 75.14, the Jesse Boot, 75.14, as well as aggregates for the MJ Amy trophy at 300 yards, the Norman Bowl for short range aggregate, the Upton for the aggregate on all 15 round shoots at short range, and also the Jersey VIII final with a total of 297.51.

GOLF: Mick Jones won the Royal Jersey Club Cup on Saturday, finishing with a nett score of 62 off his 13 handicap.

Andrew Rafferty was second, after countback, and John O’Brien third.

BOWLS: Les Rebours, Brian Corbel, Gwen Romeril and Joan Gay won the Gordon Bewhay Trophy at the Sun Bowls Club on Sunday.

They beat Austin Gillham, Tony Osmont, Henry Picot and Monica Le Maistre by eight points (20 shots) to seven points (25 shots).

GOLF: Roger Laffoley won the Jersey Western Golf Club’s AC Fiott Medal and JWGC Cup with a nett 70, off a handicap of ten at the weekend.

Second was Nick Watkins, third was Stan Le Pennnec.

CLAY PIGEON: Jon de la Haye won the class A and High Gun shoot at Crabbé at the weekend, scoring 47 ex-50.

The B class was won by Wayne Shales, 37 ex-50.

The C-class was won by Clive Feltham-Fletcher, 40 ex-50.

GOLF: The Don Hotel Trophy, played for at the Royal Jersey Golf Club on Sunday, was won by Derek Altham and John Simpson with an overall net score of 67 (80-13).

In second place were Vic Bourgoise and David Thelland 68 and a half (81-12 and a half) and third were Mick Le Feuvre and Mick Jones 69 (77-8).

GOLF: Harry Tumblety scored a hole in one at the Royal Jersey on Saturday, at the 15th hole, using a seven wood and partnering Ron Kelly and Colin Attwood.

GOLF: Fiona Hurley won the Grouse Vase at Wheatlands at the weekend, with a gross score of 92, nett 62 from a handicap of 30.

Pat Creighton was second and Linda Spence third.

CRICKET: JICC defeated Great Halton CC yesterday at Grainville by 12 runs.

Sam Dewhurst and Ian Crocker top-scored for the victors with 37 and 35 respectively as the hosts defended 177 for six.
