Football:St Brelade poised to clinch promotion

ST BRELADE are now just two points away from securing Division I football next season for the first time.

A 5-0 home victory against bottom-team Sporting Academics on Saturday enhanced Peter Taylor and Steve Proffitt’s squads’ promotion hopes as both the third and fourth-placed teams dropped points.

Nick Azern and Jack Crawford notched doubles for the Saints with Matt Godel completing the scoring.

Inactive Rozel Rovers trail St Brelade by four points, but with a game in hand.

Third-placed St Clement’s promotion hopes suffered a blow following a 1-0 defeat at St Lawrence where home first-team manager David Fitton struck the only goal.

Jersey Nomads held on to fourth spot despite a goal-less draw by Magpies at Les Quennevais.

Magpies nearly stole a late victory but they were denied late on by the woodwork.

St John moved to joint-fourth with Nomads after they came from two goals down at half time to defeat Beeches Old Boys 3-2 at St John.

Ben Fraser and Sam Baldwin shot Beeches ahead only for St John to take the points with goals from Colin Dumond’s excellent free-kick and a brace by Tony Riley.

Jersey Scottish opened an eight-point lead at the top of Division I Reserves following a 2-1 win against Wanderers at the Hockey Club.

Anthony McGovern and Steve Langan netted for the winners and Duncan Prince for the losers.

Trinity moved back into second spot after goals from Gary Doyle and Paul Cook helped the hosts defeat St Clement 2-0.

Not only did Trinity keep out the St Clement strikers they also locked the referee in the building after the match.

The ref got himself out and then had to seek assistance to lock the premises again! Grouville avenged last week’s Dog Club Trophy semi-final defeat by beating St Paul’s 1-0 at Le Boulivot.

A great strike from Ben Holt settled the issue but the visitors were denied by four excellent saves from Grouville goalkeeper Phil Maletroit.

Jon Carter scored at Le Couvent to give Rozel Rovers a 1-0 win against St John.

The Rovers appear safe at the bottom while St John’s defeat virtually ensures relegation.

Rozel’s Dave Reid missed a penalty on his return from injury.

St Ouen are promoted from Division II Reserves following a 11-2 win against Beeches Old Boys at the FB Fields.

Phil Faulkner (three), Scott Samson (two), Anthony Marett (two), Peter Hewlett, Andy de Carteret, Lee Pederick and Shane Carré scored for St Ouen and Hamlyn Moon twice for the Old Boys.

St Peter require one more point to joint St Ouen in Division I Reserves next season.

St Peter scored in the final couple of minutes to win 2-1 at home against St Lawrence.

Mark Stewart and Michael Caetano netted for the hosts and Chris Le Sueur for the visitors.

Sporting Academics, who can still go up, maintained their challenge after Michael Perreira hit a hat-trick and junior Jamie Savory a single in a 4-0 success over St Brelade at Les Quennevais.

St Martin/SCF, who have only won two games, completed a league double over the Portuguese.

Danny Harris and Sheikh Omar Sohna netting in a 2-0 victory at St Martin.

Grouville, who have a game in hand, maintained their three-point advantage at the top of the C Division after defeating bottom-team Beeches Old Boys 3-0 at Le Boulivot.

Liam Kelly, Jason Byrne and Leonardo da Silva were on target.

Sean Anderton bagged another hat-trick and Colin Roworth a single as second-placed Rozel Rovers stayed in touch following a 4-1 win at St Ouen.

Anderton has scored seven hat-tricks this season giving him a total of 31 goals.

Dave Wright replied.

Former champions Jersey Wanderers won 7-0 at St Clement.

There was a hat-trick for under-16 Ollie Thompson, two from Stuart Brown and singles by Gary Duncan and Clive Richardson.

St Peter returned 3-2 winners from the Airport against Sporting Academics, the latter who finished with ten men.

Ian Tardivel, Gary Bateley and John de la Mare notched for the winners and Stephen Nield and Gerry Brown for the losers.
