Brig-y-Don announces closure after 30 years

AN Island nursery that has cared for children for more than 30 years will close in July of next year.

Brig-y-Don pre-school, which opened in the 1970s, is closing because of financial difficulties.

It is the third private nursery to announce its closure this term.

Sunny Smiles pre-school in St Ouen closed on Friday, and the under-twos department at Goose Corner Nursery at Beaumont will close in January.

Brig-y-Don pre-school currently takes 44 children, and was originally set-up to provide financial support for the residential home on the site in St Clement.

But the home is now subsidising the pre-school, and Brig-y-Don committee chairman Susie Pinel said the situation had become unviable.

She said: ‘It is with great sadness and deep regret that we have to announce the forthcoming closure of the pre-school.

The long tradition and excellent reputation of the nursery has been enjoyed by, and benefited, many.

But the nursery is going the same way as so many other nurseries are at the moment.

‘It is a financial thing.

It was originally formed to provide some money to the residential side, but in last couple years it has been the other way round.

The States hope to provide free pre-school education for all the Island’s children in future, and there is a States nursery is opening in St Clement in September 2006, which would have been competition which we couldn’t sustain.’
