Squash:Top two clash in final

DEFENDING champion Rob Hickling meets former pro Mike Hopkins in the final of the Insurance Corporation Jersey Closed squash tournament tomorrow.

The pair both enjoyed straight-set semi-final victories last night, Hopkins beating Paul Frankland and Hickling disposing of Glyn Moignard Eight-times champion Hickling is chasing his ninth title, but Hopkins will be keen to regain the crown he won in 2004.

Their match is at 4.45 pm.

In the men’s veterans Gordon Burgis beat Barry Middleton 3-2, in a close and entertaining match, to set up a meeting with former champion Martyn Scriven who beat Ray Hockey in straight sets.

Veteran top seed Hugh Jones, who has held the crown for several years, had to be on top of his game to beat a determined John Farley, but the match of the night was in the other semi-final, between Steve Law and Allen Brown.

It lasted over an hour, until Law proved the stronger in the final game to avenge defeats by Brown earlier in the season.

Tomorrow’s ladies final will be the first meeting between second seed Adèle Kapp, who beat Chantelle Cunningham 3-0 and top seed Kate Cadigan.

O35 Plate: Paul Mundy bt Kenny McLeod 3-1; Sean Blake bt Miguel Blazquez 3-0.

Vets Plate: Paul Mundy bt Ray Hockey 3-0.
